Atlético Madrid and Manchester United have met four times in European competition, with the Spanish side still unbeaten. Atlético have won twice and drawn twice, scoring six goals and conceding two. United have never scored more than once in a match in the series.

The history is divided into two knockout ties separated by more than 30 years. Atlético eliminated the defending champions from the 1991/92 European Cup Winners' Cup and then repeated the outcome in the 2021/22 Champions League round of 16.

Atlético's aggregate advantage

The four matches give Atlético a 6–2 aggregate lead. Half of their goals came in the first encounter, a 3–0 victory at the Vicente Calderón in October 1991. Paulo Futre scored twice before Manolo added the third, giving the Spanish side control of the Cup Winners' Cup tie.

United attempted a comeback at Old Trafford two weeks later. Mark Hughes scored early, but Bernd Schuster equalised in the second half. The 1–1 draw sent Atlético through 4–1 on aggregate and ended United's defence of the trophy.

The pattern returned in a tighter form three decades later. Atlético led the first leg of the 2021/22 Champions League tie in Madrid before United produced a late equaliser for a 1–1 draw. UEFA's official report recorded a stronger attacking volume for the hosts, but the teams travelled to Manchester level.

Atlético then won 1–0 at Old Trafford. A first-half goal decided the second leg, and the visitors protected the advantage to progress 2–1 on aggregate.

What the previous meetings share

All four games belonged to two-legged knockout football, whereas the 2026 meeting comes in the Champions League league phase. That distinction matters. Neither team is managing an aggregate score, and a draw does not lead directly to a second leg against the same opponent.

Even so, the historical pattern is clear. Atlético have repeatedly limited United's attack and have avoided defeat in Madrid and Manchester. Three of the four meetings finished with no more than two total goals, and United scored only once across the two games staged at Old Trafford.

The only match to break that low-scoring pattern was the first, when Atlético scored three without reply. Since then the teams have produced three consecutive games in which neither side scored more than once.

How much history matters now

The 1991 meetings have historical rather than predictive value. Even the 2022 tie involved different squads and a knockout format. The current form data should carry more weight when assessing the next result.

History still adds useful context. United have not yet found a winning formula in this matchup, while Atlético have twice demonstrated an ability to control the decisive phase of a tie. The new league-phase structure gives United an opportunity to end that sequence without the pressure of immediate elimination.

Atlético enter the match after three consecutive domestic wins. United arrive with three Champions League points from a 4–0 opening victory. That current contrast makes the fifth meeting more open than the unbeaten historical record might initially suggest.
